Things I will never forget… the deep freezer with a bag of orange wedges jelly candy coated in sugar, going fishing, riding on the back of the four-wheeler while Joe Allen drove. The smell of Vicks Vapo Rub and rose perfume from Grandma Beth’s room at Alice’s home. Sleeping on the floor at Aunt Alice’s, the night Angie got married and crying thinking I would never see her again. Playing Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers records with Bernadette in the basement. Taking a bath at her home and her scrubbing behind my ears with a rag, I do not remember ever being taught that until then. The canal behind her home, I thought it was a river! The movie Savannah Smiles playing on her TV. The fact that my Aunt Alice gave my father (Gerald) a home to live in until he could find other arrangements after he and my mother divorced. The sound of Aunt Alice’s leather belt as she walked with her uniform and her badge, she looked SO COOL and tough… she was my childhood hero. There was a long pause for several years… my stepmom made it difficult to spend time with the Clarks, so I missed out on many opportunities for memories… Until after high school. My sunflower quilt that Aunt Alice made me for my graduation present, it was so beautiful. When I needed rescuing, Aunt Alice was there… when nobody else was. I was 19 and pregnant with my second child and had nowhere to go. She took me in, just as she had my father when I was a child. She gave me and my daughter a safe space while I carried my second. She took me to buy my first car and cosigned for me. It was a stick shift, and I did not even know how to drive it, but she told me “You are a smart girl! You will figure it out.” And I did. She taught me that I needed to be self-sufficient, and able to care for myself and my children because things do not always go as planned, that I needed to work hard and be able to provide for my family in case I ever must do it alone. She drove all the way out from Cedar Hills to my daughters’ baptisms and brought them flowers. She looked beautiful in the color yellow! I love you Aunt Alice. Hope you and my dad are hanging out and laughing, reminiscing your younger days.

I was so happy that i met this wonderful lady who i met through researching my Bleazard family. We emailed each other for many years and finally got to meet when we visited the USA. We stayed with her and the family. We couldn’t have been made more welcome.our week with Alice was packed full of memorable days as Alice showed us her world and family. We stayed in touch until she passed over and i will treasure the last mail i had from her. I will miss her so much.
