Life & Legacy
Aaron Merrill Nelson, our beloved son, and brother passed away on Sunday, June 5, 2022, at the age of 40, a victim of the ravages of alcohol. Aaron was born November 22, 1981, the first of five children of Merrill and Karen Nelson, of Grantsville, Utah. Aaron was a child of great goodness, talent, and promise--dearly loved by his family and many friends. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was taught to love God and serve others. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and was elected student body president of Grantsville High School. He went on to graduate from college and receive a law degree. He taught school and served for several years in the Army National Guard. Aaron loved to play baseball. He had a picture-perfect left-handed swing and such a good eye that he could hit nearly any pitch—and just waited for the right one. He was “a natural,” helping his high school team to a state championship and his college team to the conference tournament, where he homered in his final at-bat. Aaron loved the arts—he had a creative and inquiring mind. He was gifted in music and prose, wrote songs, performed the lead role in many stage plays and musicals, was a movie critic, read science fiction, and left an unfinished novel of his own. Aaron loved to be with his friends—we thank them for their continuing friendship and good influence. Aaron never married, but loved and brought great joy to his thirteen nieces and nephews, entertaining them with his playful antics and good humor. Aaron was preceded in death by his grandparents, Russell and Ruth Nelson of Grantsville, and Guy and Shirley Olpin of Heber City. He is survived by his parents, many aunts, uncles, and cousins, and by his siblings and their children, whom he dearly loved: Evan and Candace Nelson, of Brigham City; Ben and Breckin Nelson, of Stansbury Park; Emmeli and Dustin Bulloch, of Richfield; and Danny and Emmie Nelson of Provo. We love Aaron and now entrust him to the care of his grandparents and Savior. A funeral service will be held at the Grantsville Utah Stake Center, 550 E. Durfee Street, on Saturday, June 11, 2022, at 2:00 p.m., preceded by visitation at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be in the Grantsville Cemetery.

Truly one of the best teammates ever!! I got to know Aaron really well my senior year of high school when he was a sophomore. We spent countless hours taking grounders from Travis, just the 2 of us trying to hold down shortstop. As others have said, Aaron had one of the prettiest left-handed swings I ever knew. Such a solid guy with so many talents! You’ll be missed my man, rest easy!

Chris and I really loved the funeral ceremony. The messages were so good. They painted a great picture of who he was as a person in general and specifically to the brothers who paid tribute to him. Gospel messages were also shared in a great way. I can't imagine what it's like to lose a child and I hope I never find out but I hope that you can find comfort in the plan of happiness/salvation in this time of mortal loss. I pray that you will be comforted.

Merril and Karen, What cherished memories we have of all of your children. The ones of Aaron and our Stacy going to dances and to lagoon are some great ones. We send our love. We couldn’t make it to the services today, but I’m sure the tears were flowing. He meant something and touched the heart of so many people.

We love Aaron, he has been a part of our Family for as long as we can remember. Great times at scout camps, hand cart trek and when he would just stop by for a visit with Stacey and I. What a fun loving person to be around. I remember when Aaron and I built the zip line across the pond up at the ranch. It took us a couple of days. It was way to steep so I wanted to adjust it down so it wasn’t so dangerous. Aaron wanted to go down once before we made the changes to slow it down. He went down the zip line and wouldn’t let go and drop into the water. He hung on so he didn’t get wet. It was so fast He hit the bank on the other side of the pond and rolled up the rocky bank onto the road. He was an awesome individual We love Him and he will be missed.

A wonderful guy. He often substituted for my high school chemistry classroom. The kids always mentioned how they enjoyed having him cover my class. He was also the dad of my children in South Pacific. My kids already miss him.
