Janet Cook
July 20, 1934 — January 23, 2025
Grantsville

Janet Gwen Edwards Cook, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully in her home in Grantsville, Utah, on January 23, 2025.

Janet was born on July 20, 1934, in Stockton, Utah, the daughter of John Henry and Maurine Edwards. She was the third of four children. After graduating from Tooele High School, she attended Brigham Young University. On September 14, 1956, she married Marlyn (Morley) Cook in Stockton, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Salt Lake Temple. Janet and Morley were blessed with four children: David, Crystal, Paul, and Matthew.

A devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Janet joyfully served in numerous callings, including as Relief Society President of the Grantsville First Ward. She had a gift for teaching others and a passion for serving those in need.

Janet was born with a deep love for community and civic engagement. She served as co-chairperson and committee member of the Grantsville Old Folks Sociable and faithfully attended the event throughout the years. Proud to be an American, she played a significant role in organizing July 4th celebrations and veterans' events. A strong advocate for the voice of the people, she also served on the Tooele County School Board and the Grantsville City Council.

Her greatest joy, however, came from her family. Janet loved hosting family gatherings for holidays and special occasions. Alongside her husband, she worked hard and sacrificed to provide the resources she felt were necessary to enhance her family's happiness and success.

Janet is preceded in death by her husband, Morley; her parents, John and Maurine Edwards; and her sister, Connie Wright. She is survived by her sister, Betty Shosted; her brother, Terry Edwards; her daughter, Crystal (Kevin) Hair; her sons, David (Holly), Paul (Cory), and Matthew (Dana) Cook; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Grantsville 1st Ward LDS Chapel, 115 E. Cherry St., Grantsville, Utah, on February 1, 2025, at 12:30 PM. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the funeral services and on Friday, January 31, 2025, from 6:00–8:00 PM. Interment will follow at the Grantsville City Cemetery.

My first contact with Mrs Cook was when she substitute taught in Elementary. I remember her being patient with rowdy kids. Through the years she has been an influence for good. She gained a reputation at Tooele Army Depot as an activist against open burn/open detonation of old Munitions and air quality in Grantsville. All that just shows how pationate she was for her community and family! She is the passing of an era in Grantsville, but I believe her family will continue in her legacy! She will be missed!

Janet was one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met. Some of my favorite memories of her include going to her pumpkin patch topick out pumpkins, and later trick-or-treating at her house. You never knew if you were going to get a “trick” or a treat. She made everyone around her feel like family. She will be missed.

Dear Crystal, Dave, Paul, Matt, and Family, I am so sorry to hear of Janet’s passing. She was truly one of my favorites. I have such fond memories of her kindness and warmth—especially when we moved to Grantsville. I will always remember how welcoming Janet and Morley were to us "country cousins" from Ibapah when I started kindergarten. As a child, I loved visiting their home with my parents and trick-or-treating on Cooley Street. Janet’s leadership and civic engagement left a lasting impression on me, especially when she was on the school board. Her compassion and dedication were truly inspiring, and I feel fortunate to have known her. Please know that you are all in our thoughts during this difficult time. We love you and send our deepest sympathies.

I love this beautiful lady. She was the epitome of class. I never saw her that she wasn’t happy and so complimentary. We were together on many Old Folks Sociable programs. She also had a great sense of humor which she passed down to Paul. Janet will be missed terribly but she left a huge impact and will never be forgotten. Praying God will send his comforting love to her family that she loved so much.

Janet is one of my favorite cousins. I loved times we talked on the phone and Christmas cards she sent me. She was a very good writer and sent me some stories that I very much enjoyed and still have some of them. She was a delight to talk with. My brothers and sister would meet Janet, Betty, Doug cook, and others at Tooele for lunch. It was fun to get together and exchange updates of each others lives. Janet will be greatly missed.

Mrs. Cook was one of those great neighborhood Mom's. She remembered me from when I was little until I grew older. Janet was a good egg. She helped so many of us kids learn to be good people. It's really hard to lose a Mother. Sorry for your loss Crystal, David, Matt and Paul.

I loved Aunt Janet. My fondest memories was the Christmas Eve parties. She always laughed, made good food, loved a great talent show as much as good white elephant. Aunt Janet was always a call away or a visit away from learning history about the family, community or her youth. I enjoyed her listening to her history. One of my favorite stories was Aunt Janet showed up to one of my baby’s blessing. I was so proud that I had made an “Better than Sex Chocolate Cake”. Aunt Janet loved that cake and wanted the receipe. When I told her the name of it… she just couldn’t call it by its name. So she renamed it to “Better than Robert Redford Cake”. That is what it was called from there on out.

Janet was one of my favorite cousins. Her mother was my father, Keith Rollins, sister. She was such a delight, always smiling and positive. She always made me feel special. I was so impressed with her desire to serve in the church and her community. The world was a better place because of her. Love you Janet!

I truly LOVE your whole family!! I served and worked with Janet many times, she taught me a lot and I love her for it. I see her now up in that place we cannot see, being herself and fitting right in and helping with whatever needs to be done. You truly can "Call Her Blessed".

My condolences to David Crystal Paul and Matthew. Miss Janet was an awesome substitute teacher that I remember. I ran into her at the store many times and even thought about going to her home to visit her I wish I had. Thank you our heavenly father for receiving her in his arms in peace
