Gregory Bottelberghe

Life & Legacy
Gregory Bottelberghe, proud father of five children and treasured friend to many, died unexpectedly on June 9, 2018 at the age of 60.

Greg was born November 1, 1957, in Marshall, Minnesota, to Don and Marie Bottelberghe. After graduating from Southwest Minnesota State University, he moved to Lyons, Kansas to work at a salt production plant. His work eventually brought him to Grantsville, Utah. There he met his wife Sharon Anderson Bottelberghe and raised his children.

Greg's two great passions were hang gliding and ham radio. In 1993, he installed a distinctive ham radio tower at his home, which he used to talk to people around the world from his basement, using the call sign KG7QT. In the late 90s, he discovered hang gliding and developed a fascination with soaring over the mountains and valleys of Utah's deserts. In this pursuit, he met many new friends who knew him as 'Berg' and who became a very important part of his life.

Greg's greatest joy and achievement was raising his five children to be successful, by teaching them the value of hard work and by being an example of someone who helps the people around them.

He is survived by his wife Sharon, his children (and their spouses) Eric (Monica), Isaac (Lauren), Jacob (Camilla), Thomas (Heather), and Kate, his parents Don and Marie, his brothers Richard, Rolland and Gary, four grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his brother Mark and sister Joan.

Visitations will be held Friday, June 15th from 6-8pm and Saturday June 16th from 10am-11am, with a memorial service following at 11am, at Tate Mortuary, 110 South Main St, Tooele, Utah. In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation to assist with memorial expenses at www.gofundme.com/bottelberghe.

We love you Dad, and we will always remember to "Work Hard, Play Hard!"

Youve sacrificed many soarable days for us, to ensure we safely fly off the mountain tops. But today is your day.Its now our turn to carry your glider to launch, as theres a special thermal that has your name.Theres no time to waste, as this thermal cant be missed. This thermal will be one that goes beyond your wildest flying dreams youve ever had.Well patiently wait by your side, and safely hook you into your glider, as you had done for us so many times before.Well wait together for this last, once in a life time breeze. And you will recognize this all too familiar mountain wind when it comes, for it has taken you skyward countless times before. You see the desert wind rolling up the mountain side, and smell natures fresh blend of pine, pinyon and sage. The pine trees now come to life, as they dance under the afternoon sun, waving their limbs, as if asking you to come out and play. The wind brushes against your face, assuring you by the muffled sounds you hear through your helmet this is the one.Your glider lifts effortlessly above your shoulders, pointing perfectly down the mountain.Your fingers begin to relax, and your grips begin to loosen around the down tubes.Your adrenaline becomes a sense of calm and youre filled with serenity.Very few can understand why the birds sing, but you know their song well, as you have sang it many times before. The clouds are now popping skyward over the desert, and you can see the hawks circling thousands of feet above at their destination, cloud base. They have reached the top of their thermal, but your flight will be much better. You had left your vario and oxygen at home, as you will never need them again. This will be the flight of your life, and it will be one thats turbulent free. Clearly, bragging rights material, without the 30 day expiration date rule that weve always had. This day is your special day to fly high, and farther than you had ever imagined. Its now our time to get you safely off launch and for us to sit back and watch you fly this mountain one last time, alone. The sky is yours my friend, and this thermal is not to be shared with anyone. You must now go as Your Driver is patiently waiting for you on the other side. With the faint sound of your distance voice we can hear you say softly for one last and final time, clear. Launching.Thank you, Berg, for the good times and memories. You will always be in our hearts.Till we meet again..."Grin!"

When Greg started to work with us I quickly realized that he belongs to a group of the nicest people I have ever met. After 6.5 years of working as a team on numerous projects we were just getting ready for the next assignment Greg departed. Departed but not forgotten. My sincere condolences to the Bottelberghe Family.

Greg and I were high school friends from Marshall's Class of 1976. After reconnecting via Facebook, in the past few years, he shared about his love for his wife and children + their families (and his love of hang gliding!). Every now and then, he would send me a family photo and run down the names and ages of all, as well as share about everyone's recent life adventures. Sometimes, Greg would write, "Grin!" That was his way of sharing his trademark smile across the miles.Love, hugs, and prayers to Greg's family and friends,Lidia (Garrison) Schulzetenberg

I am sorry for your loss. Greg and I grew up together. Don and Marie let me stay with them during the many snowstorms we had we were in grade school. One particular memory I have is hill climbing with all the boys on our motorcycles. Greg had a TC185 Suzuki that had electric start. When the rest of us would kill our bikes trying to climb hills and have to kick start them, Greg would look at us and smile and hit his electric start. I'll never forget that smile! I wish I could be there to celebrate his life, but I will not be able to make it. I pray you will all get through this remembering all the joy Greg gave to us all!

I'm glad that I was able to meet Greg when I moved from TN several years ago. He was very helpful at getting me oriented to the new area and making me feel welcome with the hang gliding group. Greg was a wonderful asset and will truly be missed by those that knew him.
