Life & Legacy
Leonard M. Tayon Jr. (December 22, 1954 - May 19, 2018)

Leonard M. Tayon Jr. returned to his Father in Heaven on May 19,2018. Leonard was born in Granite City, Illinois on December 22, 1954 to Leonard M. Tayon Sr. and Clara V. Weise. He was the fourth child of six. He moved to Utah when his dad was transferred to the Tooele Army Depot. He married his beautiful high school sweetheart, Janet Paskett in July 1973. They have four supportive and loving children, Michelle and Paul Callister, Scott and Katie, Christopher and Cassie, and Cynthia and Jeff Williams. They have twelve fantastic, and fun grandchildren.

Leonard became an EMT in 1980 and soon after became a volunteer firefighter with the Grantsville Volunteer Fire Dept. Leonard and Butch Barton started the Fire Prevention Programs for the schools in 1983.

In 1992 Leonard was involved in an industrial accident at US Magnesium. He was burned over 52% of his body. He had endured many surgeries over the years. Including a cornea transplant to restore his sight. Please consider organ donation. He returned to work at US Magnesium after his recovery and he worked at the Magnesium facility for 45 years. He loved people and enjoyed life. He held many callings in the LDS Church. Leonard served as bishop of the Grantsville Third Ward from 1995 to 2000. His pure joy was serving in the Boy Scout Program.

Leonard and Janet enjoyed volunteering at the U of U Camp Nah Nah Mah, a camp for burn survivor children ages for 4 to 12 every summer. Leonard was also a counselor for the adolescent river trip where children ages 12 to 18 run the Green River. Leonard and Janet were members of the SOAR program (survivors offering assistance in recovery). They were able to talk with patients at the Intermountain Burn Center offering information and encouragement. His greatest achievement is his posterity.

Preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Clara Tayon, brother Martin Tayon, mother and father in-law Albert and Abbie Paskett, sister in-law Linda Paskett, and daughter in-law Jessica Clark Tayon.

The will be a visitation Monday, May 28th 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm at the Grantsville West Stake Center 115 East Cherry Street. Mr. Tayon played a very important role in my life, as did Janet, Scott and Cynthia. His family took me in, during a very troubled and scary time in my life. They gave me love and opportunity, shared their home and family with me, and I will forever be in gratitude. Ive always wished I could let him, and them, know how far Ive come, and how much our one on talks changed me. His light and passion, love and kindness, sincerity and generosity, are carried on, by champions Im sure, but also by fools like me. Even though its been 20+ years, Ive looked inside myself to find him, and thought often of the Tayon family throughout my life. His strength, and giving...His fortitude...was, and will always be legendary. I just wish I wasnt such a punk kid. I wish I could tell him what a change he made in me. His trust gave me rebirth. And yes, I disappeared and moved on, but as a better person. And as a man without a father, he was an amazing fill in, even in the short time we had together. To his family, you know who I am. I thank you all, from the bottom of my heart. Im 21 years sober now, from what could have killed me, 18 years married to my best friend, and promise to take a part of him with me, forever. -Ian Styles, aka Skwirl.

I was very young when I lived on Apple sreet and the first time I saw him in recovery. I remember how nervous I was the first time he reached out to shake my hand, his still wrapped in bandages, smiling no matter how much it hurt to do so. My mother told me you may not remember what they did but you always remember how they made you feel. Bishop Tayon made everyone he met feel loved.

Lenard and I shared the dubious distinction of being burned badly at US Mag, while I was in the burn unit Lenard stopped in to see me, he was also a patient at the time, I think he was getting skin graphs on his leg, he comes in all smiles, we talked and joked, and laughed. God sent me an angel that day, and I will never forget Lenard. In the 18 years we worked at the plant, we shared total respect and friendship. godspeed my friend.

What a wonferful man, the most inspirational person i had ever met. His heart full of love and compassion. Leonard helped my family and I one cold winters night. We had no heater and no firewood because it had all gotten wet. I went in search of someone near our home. After several houses. I finally stopped at Leonard's house and knocked. I never met the man before but i knew with 2 small chilren i needed to do something fast. He offered up several days worth of firewood for my family. Now looking back that could have been all he had and he still offered much. He was the answer to my prayer. I often seen him and always made sure to shake his hand and hug him and tell him that i would never forget what he had done so many years before. Thank you again my friend. I will never forget.
