Judd Raynor Lawrence November 27, 1957 — June 15, 2024 Grantsville
Judd Raynor Lawrence reluctantly left his farm and family on June 15, 2024. Judd was born in Tooele Utah on November 27, 1957 to Elbert Raynor Lawrence and Lois Parkinson Lawrence.
Judd attended Grantsville High School graduating in 1976. He attended Utah State University where he was a member of the Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society. He earned the LeGrand Johnson Construction Company Scholarship as an outstanding civil and environmental engineer. Judd made lifelong friends while attending there, graduating in 1981.
He married Christene Nyberg December 30, 1995, in Grantsville where they have resided since.
Judd started working at Bingham Engineering in 1977 during the summer following his Freshman year of College. He said that he opened the Salt Lake Phone Book and started calling Engineering Firms alphabetically. Bingham happened to be the first one listed. Judd asked if they were hiring summer help, and the rest is history.
A lifelong hobby and passion was the Family Farm. Growing up, the cows and bulls were literally in his backyard. He fed the cattle, planted and harvested alfalfa, grain, and corn and learned how to fix and repair all types of farm equipment. He also loved hearing, reading, and writing Cowboy Poetry.
Judd served on the Water Board of Grantsville Irrigation Company for many years, and he was the City Engineer for the City of South Jordan.
Judd is survived by his wife Christene. His siblings, Annalyn (Dodd) Greer, Jeane (Alex) Robinson, Elliot (Gracelyn) Lawrence. Christene’s family, son Dennis (Kim) Nyberg, their children Katara (Kevin) Martin, Dalen, and grandchildren, Maliah, Cannon, Khylee, Mack, and Keanu. Son Greg Nyberg and his children, Styler, Mandi, and Kaisa Nyberg.
Greeting Judd on the other side are his Parents, Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles and his beloved dogs, including Benny Hill, Beau, KoolAid, and Lady Girl.

Uncle Judd had the gift of story telling and unconditional love. He always told the kind of stories that made you laugh so hard your belly ached. He would crack a joke and light up the whole room. He told the most believable tales of the Boogie Man in Grandma's basement, which had me simultaneously terrified and hanging on to every word. There are too many empty chairs at Lawrence family gatherings, and I'm not yet ready to say goodbye to you. Thanks for the laughter and love - till we meet again.

Judd isn't just a terrific brother-in-law but also my friend. He always made me feel like a real part of the Lawrence family. I already miss him - his dry, sharp wit and his winning smile, and his love & concern for the family and The Farm. I know sometime soon to come well have a grand family reunion in the sky.

Judd had a heart bigger than the wide open spaces he so dearly loved. A group of us first met Judd at Utah State University while we resided in the East High Rise. Since graduation in the early 1980’s, this group has been gathering 1-2 times every year to regale in stories, introduce our families to each other and to share a deep bond and connection that I have never experienced elsewhere in my life. Judd loved to send “care” packages to us or our kids and it was always a treat to see what Uncle Judd had sent. Judd never missed one of our gatherings even when calving or haying might have gotten in the way. One of the highlights of our 40 year plus friendship is the trip when Judd introduced Christene to the group! You could tell Judd was incredibly smitten with Christene right off the bat and in a matter of minutes, she was embraced by the group as part of this family. Christene’s amazing love for Judd was ever present and it was clear that Judd finally found the love of his life! The below photo is from the February 2024 gathering in Logan. It was very special to have Judd and Christene there - this gathering was all about honoring Judd and the incredible impact he had on each of us throughout our adult lives. I speak for the group in saying our lives are so much better in having had Judd as part of our family! Judd was a warrior in fighting this battle, a generous man, and a loving husband. You could always count on Judd to make you laugh and smile. Judd will always be in our hearts and forever be remembered at our gatherings! Take great care my friend.

Wow, I'm in absolute shock to see this. I remember in high school I was on the FFA meat judging team and we went to Utah State for a competition. We stopped by Judd's room on campus and even though I didn't know him that well at the time he was very nice and down to earth. Whenever I saw him after that he always made sure to stop and say Hi and ask me what I was up to. Super nice guy. My sincere condolences to Jeane and the rest of her family.

I was jealous that Dad let Judd drive the truck when he was only 5. It was hard to admit that my younger brother was my superior, but over time I got used to it. Now I have to get used to him being gone.

My sincere sympathies to Judd's family. I worked with him since I joined Bingham Engineering in 2003. Even when I started working from home in Idaho since 2013, I always talked to him everyday. He was so smart, hard working, honest, brutally honest, and kind. I even got one hug out of him, when I temporarily left engineering to farm but then I came crawling back. He had such a broad knowledge about everything. I recently asked him about a design problem, and he just rattled off the formula right away. Bless you Christine and the rest of the family, he died too young.

I snuck a photo of him when I was waiting to go over plans and he left me hanging due to his one of many phone calls.

I went to Judd looking for an engineering internship after my junior year in college. Judd hired me right away to come and help him setup some used wheel lines that he had bought and to help him brand cows. I guess that was his way of testing me before he hired me as an intern. I had the privilege of working with Judd on the farm and at Bingham Engineering for about 8 years. He was a great mentor, and I learned a lot from him.
One of my most memorable experiences with Judd was during my second summer with Bingham Engineering. Judd and I were traveling back to Grantsville from Brian Head. The transmission went out on his truck halfway between Lynndyl and Jerico. We were able to wave down a pickup. Judd asked the driver to take me back to Lynndyl so that I could buy some transmission fluid. We were both a little spooked when the driver opened the door, and a rifle fell out. In any case, we both survived, and we limped the truck to a nearby farm, and a cranky farmer let us park it until Judd could come back for it with a trailer the next day.
My condolences to the Lawrence family. Judd will be missed by all those who knew him.
