Life & Legacy
Russel Bruce Wolfe passed away from an illness on May 22, 2022. Russel was preceded in death by his mother, Florence Ellen Tappan, and his father Russel Paynter Wolfe. He was a wonderful husband to his wife of 45 years, Melodie, a beloved father to sons Scott and Christopher Alan and daughter Cali, and adored as Pop-pop by eight grandchildren. He is survived and loved by his brother Larry and sister-in-law Lucinda. He was especially fond of dogs and will be missed by his dog of 15 years, Chokko.

He grew up on the beaches of Delaware, as an avid swimmer and fisherman. He served seven years in the United States Army, earned his Master's degree, and worked in the aerospace industry as an engineer for thirty-four years.

Russel was a loving family man who lived a full life and was fascinated by life's experiences. He and Melodie loved to travel. They lived on three continents and visited all 50 U.S. states, nine out of ten Canadian Provinces, and over 35 countries.

Throughout his life, Russel enjoyed playing card games, softball, and tennis. At one time he built and flew remote control airplanes. He loved the freedom of riding his motorcycle, riding the rim of the Grand Canyon, and attending a Sturgis motorcycle rally in South Dakota. He visited the pyramids of Egypt and skied the Alps and the mountains of Korea. Russel canoed on the Colorado River with his two boys.

Avove all, Russel loved the ocean. He grew up on the waters of the Atlantic and Chesapeake. He relished diving and fishing during his days living in the Florida Keys.

Russel lived life to its utmost and was a kind and giving person with a heart of gold. He enriched the lives of all who met him. Your intelligence, humor, and lust for life will be missed; Russel you will always be loved.

I recently received an email about Russ's passing. Unfortunately, news travels much slower in the retirement state of Florida. My memories of Russ (or as his friends affectionately called him, 'Wussel B. Wolfe, da' quascy Wabbit")  are varied and all happy. His infectious laugh, playing two man spades in the office at MT (I tried my best at cheating but I still lost), our schnitzels and Bitburger beer at the guesthouse in Liederbach, that his daughter and my son were to marry when they grew up, and talking about everything in our world at that time. I can say with certainty that Russ was a good man and I am a better person from having known him. This I believe is the greatest testament one could wish for about themselves. Melodie, I am sorry for your loss but please hold close to your heart, that there was no better husband than yours.

Sorry for the late response Melodie and family...as you know both of our families go way back to Germany (West) and life in the Hunsruck. I don't know if you know this, but I first met Russ in 1982 during an installation at Metro Tango. He was supporting an army system, and we were upgrading the hardware and software for the operator positions. During that stay, we all decided to take a world wind tour of Europe, so in just 3 days and 2 nights, we traveled to London and Paris; it was interesting to say the least, but we did survive. Then a few years went by and we found ourselves back together again in Palmdale, CA, for a number of years. He was always fun, great sense of humor, very caring, both father and husband. And you and Russ were always great with our kids, inviting them over to your house to play. We will miss him. My sincerest sympathies to you and your family, and just remember Russ will always live in our memories.

I had the good fortune to work along side Russ many times in Palmdale, California. He was always happy and easy going. And he always had a smirk on his face like he was up to something- because he probably was. And I do blame him for getting me addicted to the Marie Callender pies! It became a tradition to bring in a cream pie. Russ, you will be missed. My condolences to the family

I first met Russ when we worked in a computer lab together in VA back in '82. And then, over the next many years again in CA, Germany, and Maryland. He was a joy to work with...intelligent, diligent and a great sense of humor! He had one of those rare personalities that you always looked forward to being with. To Melodie and the "kids", my heartfelt condolences!

Long ago, in a tiny town far, far away (called Palmdale) I was lucky enough to work with Russ on one of many exciting programs. He didn’t know how to wipe that infectious smile off of his face. He was a true joy to work with and I am one of the many, many people lucky enough to have called him friend. “Wussel Woof “ you shall never be forgotten.

Russ and Melodie were a big part of our lives when we lived in Germany in the 80s as part of the 6911thESS. We would walk to their house a few towns over with our dog, Otto, and our daughter, Cassie. Melodie made our daughter a baby blanket with trains on it, as we lived in a converted train station in Unzenburg, Germany. Cassie still has that blanket! Our sincerest condolences to Melodie, Scott, Chris, and Cali and all of his grandchildren. We will always remember the great times we had so long ago when our families were just getting started.
